Own modem allowed — approved list published

Yes — GCI (Alaska) allows customer-owned modems and publishes its own approved-device list. It names devices including Netgear CM2000 and Netgear CM1000. Buy from that list — anything off it may not activate. Every detail below is quoted from GCI (Alaska)'s own page, last checked 2026-08-25.

Check the savings math: GCI (Alaska)'s own wording says: "GCI will provide you with a cable modem at no additional charge." Do not buy solely to avoid a modem fee unless GCI (Alaska) confirms one applies to your plan; owning can still make sense for hardware choice or control.
  1. Your modemyou buy it, or you rent it
  2. Your ISP's networkthey decide what connects
  3. The internetthe part you actually want
Your equipment has to satisfy GCI (Alaska) before it reaches the internet at all — which is why their published rule, not a retailer's compatibility claim, is the one that decides.

Can I use my own modem with GCI (Alaska)?

Yes, with a restriction: the device has to appear on GCI (Alaska)'s published approved list. In their words: yes, conditional on certification. Verbatim: "Although GCI provides cable modems for customers at no charge, GCI supports customers using their own equipment. GCI may prohibit the use of certain cable modems because of security and/or compliance issues. All customer-provided cable modems require GCI certification if not already on the supported device list below." Also: "GCI cannot guarantee that any non-GCI owned equipment will work with our Service. We may not be able to support or troubleshoot this equipment and will not be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of any equipment that we did not provide."

Does GCI (Alaska) charge an equipment rental fee?

"GCI will provide you with a cable modem at no additional charge."

What DOCSIS version does GCI (Alaska) require?

No DOCSIS version number is published. The Internet Terms & Conditions (https://www.gci.com/terms-conditions/internet-service) state only: "Any Customer Equipment submitted for certification must, at a minimum, be approved by the FCC and also be CableLabs DOCSIS certified."

Do GCI (Alaska)'s requirements change with my speed tier?

Per-plan support is published on the companion page https://www.gci.com/support/supported-modems ("The modems below have been tested and approved by GCI for each of the internet plans and speeds referenced in the chart."). For the two retail/customer-purchasable models on that chart, verbatim: "NETGEAR | CM2000 | red Unlimited, Fastest, Faster, Fast | Cable Modem" and "NETGEAR | CM1000 | Fastest, Faster, Fast | Cable Modem". Cabling: "To maximize the speeds for your plan, connect this setup using a Cat6e Ethernet cable."

Can I use my own router with GCI (Alaska)?

Customer-owned Wi-Fi routers are permitted alongside GCI's equipment. Verbatim from the Internet Terms & Conditions: "Customers are not restricted from attaching devices, including wireless routers, to the network access equipment that GCI provides, subject to any security limitations noted herein, including GCI's right to prohibit any Customer Equipment that it finds harmful." The three approved customer-owned models are all standalone cable modems, not gateways; GCI's own gateway/router units on the supported chart (Sagemcom FAST 3896U/3896UM, Hitron Coda-4582, Plume SuperPod AX/SuperPod) are GCI-supplied, not customer-purchase items.

What does GCI (Alaska) not allow?

"GCI may prohibit the use of certain cable modems because of security and/or compliance issues." No specific make+model is named as excluded. Also: "If GCI finds customer-owned equipment to be detrimental to the network, GCI will mandate the immediate removal of that equipment regardless of certification or any "end of support" date." For mobile-network-delivered plans: "For any GCI services delivered over our mobile wireless network (including but not limited to Rural Wireless Internet), you must only use the equipment that we certify for use with these plans."
