How do I find a router that works with Brightspeed?
Brightspeed publishes requirements rather than naming specific devices, so match anything you shortlist against the requirements on this page, then confirm the exact model with Brightspeed before ordering.
Can I use my own modem with Brightspeed?
Yes. Brightspeed permits customer-owned equipment that meets its published requirements. In their words: for fiber, a router you own: "you do have the option to use a router of your choice" and "Can I use my own router? Yes, you can choose to provide your own WiFi router if it meets these specifications". For DSL, a third-party modem is allowed at your own risk: "If you understand and accept these risks and would like to use a third-party modem, you will need to get support from the modem's manufacturer."
Do I need a modem for Brightspeed Fiber?
No. Brightspeed: "you won’t need a modem for fiber internet. Instead of a modem, your Brightspeed Fiber connection uses an optical network terminal (ONT)". The ONT is Brightspeed's and stays; the Wi-Fi router is the part you can choose.
What router does Brightspeed Fiber need?
Brightspeed lists: speed "at least equal to your purchased internet speed", a "1 Gbps Ethernet WAN port", "DHCP to obtain WAN IP Address", and "802.11ac or 802.11ax with at least 2x2 wireless radios". For multi-gig plans, equipment "should be built to support 2.5 Gbps".
What do I buy for Brightspeed DSL?
Not a Wi-Fi router on its own. Brightspeed: "For Brightspeed Internet customers, you need a combination DSL modem and WiFi router to be compatible with your phone line." A third-party DSL modem needs credentials from Brightspeed tech support, and Brightspeed says it "cannot guarantee that third-party modems will work". The router links on this page are for fiber.
Is Brightspeed's certified modem list a shopping list?
No. It lists Brightspeed's own gateways (Actiontec, Zyxel, Technicolor and Greenwave models) that "have undergone testing on the Brightspeed network". Brightspeed says third-party modems "have not been tested with the Brightspeed network" and are used at your own risk.
Can I use a cable modem on Brightspeed?
No. Brightspeed: "modems from cable internet providers do not work with Brightspeed internet service."
How do I activate my own equipment on Brightspeed?
Fiber: "Run an Ethernet cable from the Wide Area Network (WAN) port on your router to the Ethernet port on your ONT. Remember, your ONT may be installed on the outside of your home." Then "Follow the instructions provided with your device to create a wireless network." DSL with a third-party modem: "Connect your modem to a power outlet and a phone jack", then contact Brightspeed tech support "to find out if your modem is 'talking' to the Brightspeed network, and to get the right credentials to connect your third-party modem."
What should I watch out for with Brightspeed?
A new installation always starts on Brightspeed's gateway: "your Brightspeed technician will use a Brightspeed gateway to set up your connection. Once this is done, you can return the Brightspeed gateway and use your own router if you wish." Brightspeed also asks for a router that "Supports manual configuration in 'access point' or AP mode; can disable DHCP", and its own gateways can't be put in that mode: "the Brightspeed C4000, C3000, and C3510 gateways cannot be configured in access point mode." The "certified modems" Brightspeed lists (C3000A, C3000Z, C3510XZ, C4000 series and others) are its own leased gateways, not a list of retail devices to buy. Brightspeed: "Third party routers are not guaranteed to work with your Brightspeed Fiber connection."
Do Brightspeed's requirements change with my speed tier?
Brightspeed's router specifications: "Maximum bandwidth capability at least equal to your purchased internet speed"; "1 Gbps Ethernet WAN port"; "Built to support WiFi speeds up to 1 Gbps; for multi-gig speeds, equipment should be built to support 2.5 Gbps"; "Minimum of WiFi 5 standards; preferably WiFi 6 or 6e".
Can I use my own router with Brightspeed?
On fiber the router is the only thing you choose: "Unlike other types of internet connections, you won’t need a modem for fiber internet" and "Whether or not you decide to use your own router, you will need to use the ONT that Brightspeed provides, which is included in the cost of your internet service." Brightspeed's specifications for your own router: "1 Gbps Ethernet WAN port", "DHCP to obtain WAN IP Address", "802.11ac or 802.11ax with at least 2x2 wireless radios".
